School Spirit. This collection of images is a documentation of the past few months of the 2012-13 school year at Camden Hills Regional High School. What often comes into mind with school-documenting photography are mug shots after mug shots. By that I mean: “Hey guys, squeeze together for a picture will you?!” Snap. Moment over. My goal when shooting for the school yearbook is to capture moments that are of significant meaning.

Members of the soccer team, Connor Winchenbach, Bill Bracher, Brandon Nolan, and Truman Moore, battle it out against the football team in a round of tug-of-war.

You will find in most of these photographs, people are dressed up, in uniform, or just having a blast. A significant portion of them were taken during the annual fall Spirit Week and pep rally–a perfect time to get great candids. It’s very important to refrain from what I like to call the Facebook-mentality of shooting, and wait for decisive moments, rather than a staged mug-shot. Not only that, it is much more fun to be low on the ground, at the perspective of the struggling tug-of-war teammates, or above the face of a teacher who just got smacked with red paint. Below is a collection of images that express what school spirit is, better than I could ever do so in words.
